Saturday 10th October - Windsurf **** - River Orwell at Levington Marina – mainly cloudy with heavy rain late.

Foil – 18.27 knot max, 17.18 knot ave ., 10.73 knot hour, 16.06 knot mile, 26.83 km ., 11.94 knot alpha.

Exocet RF 91 AST with Slingshot Hover Glide 76 with Tushingham Lightning 7m.

Now that’s 7 sessions in 7 days covering 180 miles+ :) I was going to give today a miss as it’s been a full-on week and I was knackered, so I did my back exercises and it started to rain, chilly too so that made my mind up not to go. Then the rained eased and I checked Landguard weather station and there was a good 20 knot + breeze from the west, a good direction for Levington and with the tide turned and coming in I decided to have a run over to check things out? I dropped Mag off enroute for her hours walk and arrived at the marina just before 2. I had taken my big short fin board just in case there was enough wind to fin and I was short of water to foil but I had plenty of water and the wind looked patchy so quickly set up my foil, taking a chance in my 7m Lightning again. I launched out of the marina entrance and was soon up and flying in a very good breeze but ran out of wind and gybed I then had four two mile runs down to Felixstowe docks flying all the way. This can be a great spot when it works and this two-mile reach is fantastic, smooth water and I managed to keep it flying through most of the lulls getting several nice mile times for a foil, the only thing keeping my speeds below 20 knots is the poor sailor on the board, just too scary!!! But what fun flying past the many yachts, even managed to get my picture taken. There was some big gust but the 7m handles them very well:) It was getting very black across the river and with the wind picking up I decided to call it a day, good call as it absolutely tipped it down while I packed up!

PS – just a cautionary note, windsurfing friend of many years who is really keen on long distance foiling had a lucky escape today when is Slingshot fuselage sheared off as he headed up the coast. He was lucky he still had his mast attached to his board, managing to sail ashore and got his wife to pick him up. That is the third Slingshot foil I have heard that has failed which makes me nervous as I like a long-distance adventure too, I have changed the bolts that broke so fingers crossed I can keep my foil in one piece but it has been very well used this year so who knows????
